Description
The Indian Flap-shelled Turtle - Lissemys punctata
By Dieter Gramentz
This in-depth book brings together all known information about the Indian flapshell turtle (Lissemys punctata), one of the most ecologically adaptable and widespread turtles in South Asia. Found across the Indian subcontinent—from Sri Lanka to the foothills of the Himalayas—this hardy species can withstand extreme heat, drought, and even the loss of limbs. Though aquatic by nature, it is capable of long terrestrial journeys when needed and has evolved several effective defenses against predation.
Despite being considered one of the most primitive softshell turtles, it retains features shared with hard-shelled species, such as a more domed carapace and peripheral bones. It is also small enough to be kept in captivity, where rare behavioral observations have been made, including courtship and copulation. The Indian flapshell turtle offers a unique opportunity for further study in coevolution and parasitology, being host to more internal parasites than any other trionychid turtle.
Sadly, this species faces mounting pressure from overharvesting for food, with tens of thousands killed annually across the Indian subcontinent—and now increasingly exported to East Asian markets. This volume aims to consolidate what is known about Lissemys punctata, bridging gaps between anatomical, ecological, and behavioral research to support future conservation efforts.
