Latin Name: Grus canadensis
Range: The summer breeding range is in the northern U.S. and Canada. The winter range is in the southern part of the U.S. and Mexico. The Wilcox Playas just northwest of Portal, AZ is a great place to see cranes in the winter.
Fact: Sandhill Cranes have naturally gray feathers. The reddish-brown color comes from preening with mud and vegetation stained with iron oxide.
