Description
Reptiles of the Lesser Antilles
by
Roger S Thorpe
Explore the rich herpetofauna of the Lesser Antillean archipelago with this detailed and visually engaging book, covering every island from Sombrero in the north to the Grenada Bank in the south. This essential reference is divided into five informative sections: Introduction, Taxa, Island Banks, Biogeography, and Conservation.
The Taxa section provides an overview of the major reptile groups found throughout the region, including anoles, iguanas, curlytails, skinks, teiids, dwarf geckos, larger geckos, blindsnakes, boas, pit vipers, colubrids, turtles, and crocodilians. Rather than repeating information, widespread species are described once in the Taxa section and referenced in individual island accounts.
Each island bank—from Anguilla to Dominica to the Grenadines—is covered in its own chapter, designed to function as a standalone field guide. These chapters feature clear descriptions, distribution notes, and full-color photographs of native and introduced species. Special attention is given to variation within species across islands, as well as the origins of native reptiles—whether they trace back to the Greater Antilles or the mainland.
Up-to-date and grounded in the latest science, the book also addresses current conservation issues, such as invasive species (like Anolis cristatellus in Dominica) and hybridization threats (notably in iguanas). Recent advances in molecular phylogeny and taxonomic revisions, such as the reclassification of regional skinks, are also included, making this a vital resource for researchers, field biologists, and nature enthusiasts alike.
