Agraulis vanillae is not really a fritillary, but an heliconius, or longwing butterfly. They are found from Argentina through the southern U.S. The caterpillars eat passionflower vines and sequester toxins that make them distasteful to predators. They often hold their (3 inch) wings up while resting showing off silvery spots on the underside.
