Morpho peleides is an iridescent tropical butterfly from central and south America. It's brilliant blue color is caused by the diffraction of light by millions of tiny scales on the wings. It confuses or frightens predators by rapidly flashing it's big (7 inch) wings. The underside of the wings are not iridescent, but brown with eyespots.
