Description
Field Guide to the Amphibians and Reptiles of Israel
by Aviad Bar Guy Haimovitch and Shai Meiri (Author)
Israel’s location at the crossroads of Asia and Africa, bordered by the Sahara and Arabian deserts to the south and the Mediterranean and mountains to the north, makes it a hotspot of zoological diversity. A wide range of landscapes, habitats, vegetation types, and fauna are packed into a small, easily navigable area.
The country hosts nearly 90 species of reptiles from 25 different families—an impressive variety all observable within a half-day’s drive from Tel Aviv or Jerusalem. This accessibility makes Israel a prime destination for both reptile enthusiasts and professional herpetologists. Amphibian diversity is lower due to the region’s arid climate, with eight species across six families still represented.
This book offers current, practical information on every reptile and amphibian species found in Israel—terrestrial and marine, native and introduced. Topics include identification, taxonomy, biogeography, life history, conservation, general biology, and potential risk to humans. It serves as both a field guide and a scientific resource, especially valuable given the lack of updated herpetofaunal references for neighboring countries.
An extensive update of the earlier Field Guide to the Amphibians and Reptiles of Israel (originally published by Pazbar), this new edition has grown from 246 to 512 pages. It features revised species descriptions, high-quality images, and updated distribution maps. A special chapter focuses on species inhabiting sandy environments, complete with photos and guidance on identifying their tracks. The book also explores Israel’s unique conservation challenges and the biogeographic diversity that underpins its rich herpetofauna.
512 pages, 300+ color photos, color distribution maps
