Did you know that butterflies wings are transparent? The wing is layers of a protein called chitin. The chitin is thin enough that you can see right through the wings. As a butterfly ages the scales that cover the chitin (these scales reflect light creating colorful wings) fall off and where the chitin is exposed the wing is transparent.
