The biohazard symbol was first used at the Dow Chemical Company in 1966. The company wanted a symbol that was:
- Striking in form
- Unique and unambiguous
- Quickly recognizable
- Easily stenciled
- Look identical from all angles
- Acceptable to all ethnic groups
Over 40 symbols were drawn up before this one was chosen.
